Grandfather Jones was a dignified man and very well thought of by all who knew him. He left the Maryland farm to become a storekeeper, learned the trade and then acquired his first store in Mannington, West Virginia. He achieved great success in the retail business and retired to a fine home that he named "Fairmont Manor" on the Indian River near Stuart, Florida.
The final paragraph in the forward of his book "Recollections" states a very worthy ideal and is indicative of the man who wrote it:
Life usually has many hard places for most of us. If we can overcome adversity and command the love of our family and the respect of many friends, we have a right to hope that the world has been made a bit better by reason of our having lived in it.

My grandmother Jones passed away several years before I was born, but I heard my father say on many occasions that his mother was a sweet and gentle woman, greatly adored by her husband and her three sons.
