The Robison/Robinson Family

of Chester County, Pennsylvania

A012

The handwritten notes of my maternal grandmother, Pauline Null Henderson, identified her maternal grandparents as Alexander McCarter and Harriet Ann Robinson. She also identified the parents of Harriet Ann as Frederick Robison and Sarah Ann Gilliam and noted that family members spelled the surname differently.

When I received the death certificate shown below, I accepted for a time the correctness of the “official” document that stated her father’s first name was John and discounted Granny’s memory that it was Frederick.

State of Delaware – Certificate of Death – No. 3130 – Registered No. 307 – Wilmington, New Castle County

  • Harriet A. McCarter b. 5 Apr 1834 d. 28 Feb 1922
  • Father: John Robinson – birth place: England
  • Mother: Sarah Gilliam – birth place: England

Wrong decision !!! Granny was probably right.

Frederick Robison shows up in the 1830 Census, Chester County, E. Nottingham Township, page 267. The family had grown by the 1840 census to the point that the spread of ages are a pretty good indication that this is the right family.

1840 Census, Chester County, E. Nottingham Township, page 233, roll 142, series T-5

  • Frederick Robison
  • 2 males under 5 (John b. 1837, age 3; Martin b. 1840, age 1)
  • 1 male 5 -10 (Mathew b. 1830, age 10)
  • 1 male 10 -15 (?)
  • 1 male 40 – 50 (Frederick b. circa 1795)
  • 1 female 5 – 10 (Harriet b. 1834, age 6)
  • 1 female 40 – 50 (Sarah Ann, b. 1799, age 41)

The one inconsistency in this data from the known family configuration is the unknown male aged 10-15. All other factors match, i.e., census location, census mother’s age, census ages and sexes for children and father’s name per Granny’s notes.

Frederick is listed as head of household in the 1830 and 1840 census data, but was not shown in the 1850 census, indicating that he died sometime after his daughter Sarah Charlotte was conceived and born in 1846. Immigration from England probably occurred in the 1820’s.

Another inconsistency is the PA birthplace listed for Sarah Robinson in the 1850 and 1860 census as the death certificate for Harriet Robinson McCarter states that her parents were born in England.
