The Foster Family

of Sussex County, Delaware

A003

I now suspect that David R. Foster may have originated in Lewes & Rehobeth Hundred of Sussex County, Delaware as he returned to that area while starting a family. Evidently while still a bachelor, David Foster found work in neighboring Kent county. This information was found in the 1850 Census, Kent County, Duck Creek Hundred, page 56:

  • Rhodes R. Foster 24 M Ship Carpenter DE
  • David Foster 20 M Ship Carpenter DE

The age and the occupation indicate that this is my David Foster. David and Rhodes were living in a house (dwelling 24, family 24) with seventeen people. The only couple is George (32) and Mary (33) Collins – George is the head of the household and his occupation is listed as Seaman. There is one family (children only) of Fennimores ranging from 20 down to 10 years old and the rest are young men in their twenties who are mostly ship carpenters – and one brick mason.
